I had an action-packed evening planned.  It was going to run as follows:-

1) Plant out an annual.
2) My Tuesday evening exercise session - 10minutes stretching and warm-up, 2 minutes run, twenty minutes pilates.
3) Relax in a Lush bath.
4) A nice leisurely blog-post about Pompeii.

Instead, I spent the next two hours in Accident & Emergency, getting a lovely 1 and a half inch smiley face shaped gash in my elbow stitched up,  And to add insult to injury, the bloomin' anaesthetic didn't work very well.  The doctor was most apologetic.  "Oh, don't worry," I said through gritted teeth.  "Call it good research for my writing."

Yeah.  What a NICE way to spend your teatime.

They say that most accidents happen in the home, and this was no exception.  Though I suppose that technically speaking, the accident in question actually happened outside the home.  Events ran as follows: I sprang out of the car, navigated my way past the rain-crushed columbines and paenies, then promptly slipped on the steel door mat and in doing so, managed to split my elbow open.

"I think you'll have to go to the hospital," my husband advised, in his best 'We won't Make A Drama Out of a Crisis' voice.  And he was right.  I was eventually sent back home with three stitches...

And the reason for this debacle?  A pair of super-duper expensive walking shoes with vibram soles.  I bought these things because I thought they'd be secure for walking.  How wrong could I be?  This is the third time I've ended up on my derriere on account of these wretched shoes.  Though this is the first and so far the only time I've been sent packing to the hospital....

Ah well.  The best laid plans of mice and men, etcetera...

The things you do in the name of research!

Glad your okay - and hope you mend quickly.

Ooh, ouch! Any point in writing to the shoe manufacturers? I have some super-duper Merrils and they're the best thing for my feet when it's dry, but on a wet surface they're treacherous - especially on a wet tiled floor for example. Going to the loo has become a dangerous sport - especially when floors are newly mopped.

I hope your elbow feels better soon - and do make good use of that experience in your writing.

These are Berghaus, and it's exactly the same. Stone pavements are particularly treacherous - the first time I got upended, I slid on a basalt kerbstone...

My walking boots are Hi Tec composites and they've never let me down on any sort of surface (so far :o)

My Brasher hiking boots are similarly reliable - except on sheet black ice...

Tell me about anaesthetics not working. "You can jam thee syringes of that stuff into my arm; it won't make a difference. Just go on and clean that wound." - "You SURE? But it will HURT." - "Yeah, but the sooner you'll get at it the sooner it will be over. Think Medieaval, lass."

In the end the little assistamt girl did such a careful poking that I took the pincer out of her hand and removed those nasty gravel bits myself until the boss came in and took over. He was more my style. "You want something to bite on? I'll be done with that mess in a minute." And he was, plus it didn't even hurt as badly as that careful poking.

Oh, you're much braver than me. I'm just glad I couldn't see it. I was blithely thinking it was just a teensy-little cut that needed a stitch to close it up. But my awfully nice doctor showed me in no uncertain terms what I'd managed to do to myself.

My husband pointed out that I'd probably suffered just as much poking during all the shennanigans with the local anaesthetic as I would have done getting the stitches...

Oh, I'm a looker. I also watch when I get blood samples drawn - it's such a pretty colour. :)

I've been telling docs not to bother with the aneasthetics for years now. Though I admit the dentist can be really nasty - a root canal treatment without it is no fun. But getting some would only slightly dull the pain if I'm lucky, in exchange for a pregnant-whale-sized headache for the rest of the day. Some drops of cloves' oil on the misbehaving tooth have about the same pain-dulling effect without the headache.

Yikes! Methinks those shoes may not be long for this world, er, your closet. Elbows are such a horrid place for healing, too. Hope it heals quickly and relatively painlessly.

Well, no...but as an accident-prone person, I can whole-heartedly sympathize. Sometimes inanimate objects simply attack!

I've had them a while, so it's a bit late. But I'll be more circumspect in my selection next time!

Ouch! I'd return those and demand a refund or you'll sue them for false advertizing. Send them the hospital bill.

It's a bit late for that now. I've had these for a couple of years.

Thankfully, we still live in a country where we get free hospital and emergency treatment.

I'm glad all you needed was a few stitches. Yowch.

I'm always flabbergasted by how treacherous shoes can be. I bought a decent pair of flats because my heels made me nervous, but lo and behold, the toe portions of the flats are so slick that if I'm not on carpeting, I'm liable to pitch forward any time I forget myself and attempt to walk naturally. Sheesh.

I hope you heal quickly! But great idea to use the pain as writing fodder, that's what I do! : )

Oh, and try giving birth when the anaesthetic doesn't work - especially when they do an episiotomy!! Now THAT is pain!

Ow! Ow! That sounds nasty.

I absolutely hate treacherous footwear and I'd be pretty annoyed at shoes that advertised themselves as sure-footed but in fact were anything but.

Buying walking shoes seems to be a bit of a lottery. I miss my reliable old Dr Martens - they don't seem to sell my old favourites in the shops anymore and I'm suspicious of buying shoes on-line...

Yowza! Dreadful! (I'm coming back to read some entries--sorry to think that in the time I've been away from your journal, you had a nasty accident...)

Hurrying to get back to the page where you first noticed the little doodles that turn out to be an important archaeological find in the more recent entry--a very cool thing, but I want to read about it in chronological order...
