Another day, another couple of buildings scored off the list.  Including the 'Loveshack', which one of my colleagues wittily described as 'a Tudor Wendy House From Hell'.

I am knackered, and lost for inspiration, so please bear with me, as I will soon return with new stories, new images and lots of archaeology to share with you!  Tomorrow, I may be resorting to the garden...

Last night at the Writers Group was interesting.  I was accused of writing science fiction, which - although probably meant in a negative sense - didn't worry me too much, as I've resigned myself to the fact that my current WIP sits best amongst the speculative fiction category.

And now I've got to go and make some phone calls.

I'm tempted to ask who it was who 'accused' you of writing science fiction. Anyway, I wouldn't let it bother you - at a recent children's book fair there were apparently a lot of time travel novels around. I was just reading about it the other week. So maybe there's something in the air and you've caught the mood.

Not much.

But there was a woodcut of him being hoisted up on the shoulders of the crowd, rabble-rousing...

I don't get people who use science fiction as a put-down. Just look at the top-grossing movies: people love SF.

Yay for spec-fic. Honestly, is there any other kind?
:-)
I found a local writers' group a couple of years ago and they were totally bemused by the fact that I wrote about things that were... err... not real. Not only did I write about it, but I sold it, too. Needless to say the group didn't last long.

The comments were interesting, but it's a moot point anyway. The MS is already with an editor (thankfully, my friends weren't upset about the nuts & bolts of the writing) so if he wants it, I guess I'll follow his suggestions! They're used to me presenting historicals, so this is a bit of a departure. And they didn't have an issue with the same section when it was presented in an earlier, much rougher draft...

What is speculative fiction? I'm a bit dense when it comes to that term.

Um, that's a good point. In a way, all fiction's speculative to a degree, isn't it? I always just assumed it's like science fiction but broader-based, and less science-oriented.

I was 'accused' of writing magical realism. My response? 'How very astute of you!'

The genre is immaterial; it's the content that matters, & whether or not you are writing a decent story. The various genres will find their readers.

And I agree. IMV, all fiction is speculative!

You see, I still live in the old world where 'science fiction' was the umbrella catch all term for the place where all manner of strange, weird, wondrous and imaginative fiction came to rest. I even see historical fiction as a branch of science fiction, as I think the principles are the same. You take some basic tenets of what you believe humanity to be about, and twist them to see what happens. SF often takes it forward in time, HF takes it back...

Well, that's my two cents worth, anyway!! This little debate could run and run...
