A Whole Lot of Nothing...
Jul. 13th, 2010 08:33 pmI was out on site in the Ayrshire town of Galston today, doing... Well, not very much, really. The job was one of the most tedious ones I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. It was a car park, occupying the site of a 19th century house. It had been demolished, but much still survived as a thick band of rubble. We spent all day ploughing through it. Lovely!!
If you look up Galston on the web, it gets a bad press from some quarters, presumably from the disillusioned teens who are 'bored' there. We met a few contenders today, a couple of silly girlies who were mountaineering their way round the town's flood defences. Intrepid, definitely. But prudent, absolutely not. One slip could have meant death...
Anyway... Despite the best efforts of the anti-Galston brigade, I rather like this town. It's one of these little west of Scotland towns that has a tower-house plonked slap-bang in the middle of it (15th century, in point of fact). I went out looking for it today, but it was a bit too far away for me to find it. So the view of the office is, I'm afraid, not that inspiring.

It was a much nicer view when the sun was out earlier in the morning, but I missed the window of opportunity.
The job was supposed to take a day, but unfortunately we didn't finish up completely. I've got to go back tomorrow, for more of the same. Only this time, the weather forecast's awful. "Bring a book and a golf umbrella," suggested the digger driver. Oh, joy! I'm just glad I didn't have to do the rest of it - no wonder my colleague was so eager to toss it in my direction.
At least, in theory, tomorrow's stint will only take part of the day. I'm sure it'll be quite enough to get me soaking wet, mind.
