Yesterday, I was reminded just how dumbed down Aunty Beeb has become over the last few years.

As an inquisitive ten year old, I bought a second hand library book about the moon.  I spent ages trying to work out the difference between perigee and apogee, and never quite got the hang of it, but at least I tried.  When I heard about this 'super full moon' event last week, I thought, "Ooh!  That's when the moon's at perigee or apogee, and I can't for the life of me remember which."  That august publication, The Daily Metro, came galloping to the rescue, when it informed readers in its article on the forthcoming 'super full moon' that this week the moon was going to reach its perigee

Unfortunately, the BBC weren't quite as scientifically specific.  On the BBC breakfast show, they just brushed over the technical terms and left them completely unspoken.  Oh, come on, Beeb!!!  You can do a bit better than that, surely!!!  It's as bad as dear old David Dimbleby coming out with the immortal line, 'that pointed bit at the top of the building'.  It's a PEDIMENT, David!!!  It's only three syllables.  Surely Joe Public can cope with that!

Rant over.  I didn't think I'd get to see the 'super full moon', because the weather forecast was for cloudy overcast conditions in the west.  But I looked out at 11pm, and there was the moon.  To celebrate, here's a really bad photograph:-

Now it's garden time.

I finally finished weeding the rose bed and pruning its denizens.  It looks a whole lot better than it did when it last featured in this blog.  It's amazing what a severe haircut, a bit of growth in the daffodils and a few flowers on the primulas can do for a flower-bed:-

Once again, I hope to plant this bed with cosmos, snapdragons, anagellis and lobelia, and maybe throw in a few papaver 'Angel's Choir' for good measure.

The next project is the big one.  It's the large herbaceous border next to the drive.  It's already looking okay, as the hellebores are in full swing, and the daffodils are well on the way to flowering.  But once again, it needs a good haircut and general tidy up:-

And very soon, I'll have to make the momentous decision to pull up the dead hebe, because I don't think it's going to recover this year.

I'm signing off now.  I've got a manuscript to tidy up today.  Just one last thing:  my heartfelt congratulations to the Irish rugby team!  They stopped the perenially-arrogant and complacent English rugby team dead in their tracks yesterday, giving the Celtic nations the last laugh by depriving Martin Johnson's motley crew of their Grand Slam.

Phew!  The television reporting of the event has been decidedly muted this morning, which has been a blessed relief for all, I think.  The thought of the pro-England media contingent crowing endlessly about their victory ad inifinitum is too cruel to contemplate...

One of our hebes joined the great flowerbed in the sky as well this year.

I've a feeling my phormium and my phygelia will be heading that way, too. That's good. They were both getting a bit overpowering for my liking. I'd like to replace them with a silver buddleia and maybe a mallow this year. And the hebe's location would be perfect for yet another hellebore.

It's quite amusing, isn't it? A couple of years back, they were telling us to ditch the cottage garden staples and invest in mediterranean plants because of global warming...

You've been clever in how you've planted your borders for you've lots of greenery already despite the fact it's so early in the season. Too many gardens just have bare earth at this time of the year.

It's taken a few years to get to that stage. It's like choreographing a complex and very slow fireworks display.

Hellebores are always a good bet at this time of year...

Your garden is beautiful. We've also got a flower bed in front of our house, where my mother grows some flowers, not to speak about about an orchard in village where we grow poptatoes and other vegetables. But there is still much snow on the ground in our country now.
I've heard about the super full moon, but forgot to go out and shoot it with my camera.

You ain't seen nothing yet, as far as the garden's concerned! It's early days...

I played Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' yesterday, just to hurry things along. At least we've got the Gulf Stream to help reduce the length of our winters. Though how long that'll keep going, what with global warming, remains to be seen.
