According to the local news reports, there's been widespread structural damage across lowland Scotland following yesterday's gales.  But...  The Building From The Higher Levels of Hell made it through the night.  Or at least, I think it did!!

The morning was quiet, but towards lunchtime, the winds began to pick up again, but since we were on the ground floor, it didn't really bother us.  We were finishing up the recording today when there was an all mighty clatter from outside.  Knowing that all my crew were accounted for, I didn't give it a second thought.  It was only when we went back outside that we noticed a fundamental difference in our building.

Picture the scene.  The building is a four storey T-shaped box (think brick warehouse), with a big open void at 2nd floor height where a hoist used to load stuff onto waiting lorries.  The beam of the hoist projects out over the nearby road.  Anyway...  We noticed that a HUGE black flap of something was draped over the hoist, like a malevolent pennant or flag.  It stretched the full length of the upper two storeys and it was flapping ominously...

I can only assume that it was a piece of roofing felt, and I can't think of any other place it came from but The Building From the Higher Depths of Hell.  We surveyed it just in the nick of time then, before the demolition works started of their own accord!!

We scarpered pretty quick, in case it decided to fall down on top of us.  I'm just glad it didn't hit either us, or the car!!

I'd never realised that archaeology was quite so hazardous, what with Richard the Thirds and self-demolishing buildings... So 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was, in fact, a documentary?

This is the closest I've got to Raiders, I must say. There's a whole load of ramshackle stairs to navigate - the unsafe ones are taped off, but... My colleague quite rightly asked how the decision to call a stair 'unsafe' is made? I had to reply that I supposed it was when something broke during a visit. She wasn't very reassured, and we were both glad to get back down to terra firma.

Needles to say, we have a very comprehensive risk assessment. And I always tell my crew that if they don't like the look of something, don't do it. There's no use risking life and limb for archaeology.

Whoa! High winds are so scary and when chunks of stuff start blowing around, discretion is definitely the best part of valour.

We were uncomfortably close to a very tall steel clad building with bits hanging off. Thankfully, it was downwind...

Glad you made it out safely! Though it's really quite considerate of the building to start its own demolition!
