Hoorah!  I got home tonight!!!

I don't know what's happened on the A737, but a 20 minute journey has just taken me 1hr 30 minutes to complete, and believe me, I was one of the lucky ones!

It started snowing at 8.15 this morning, and by 11am, about 3 or 4 inches had fallen.  The snow was easing by then - my colleague baled out at noon, but I figured that it was better to sit it out in the office and try and let the authorities get the roads cleared rather than add to the already considerable problem.

I can't figure out what's gone wrong.  Don't get me wrong - the roads are damned treacherous just now.  But the bugbear in my journey, a gently sloping slip road that takes me off the dual carriageway, was perfectly navigable with care.  Everything seems to stem from an incident which has taken place further down the A737 and which has caused a huge tailback.  And, of course, instead of waiting patiently in the queue, there's a significant minority of drivers who are trying to push their way in at the point where the road branches.  They've caused another snarl-up, and now they're preventing the traffic which is trying to come off the slip-road from moving freely.

Watching the way people behave at times like this, sometimes it's hard to believe that human beings have achieved so much success by being a social animal!

Glad you're safely home! Often, the worst part of commuting in a storm is not the snow or the road conditions, but the other drivers.

It takes so little to make it all go wrong. I remember reading somewhere that the IRA had worked out that taking out six sets of traffic lights in London would send the entire south of England into near-instant gridlock. Sometimes it gets close to that without any terrorists.
