More From Fingal's Cave...
Jan. 20th, 2012 06:14 pmSince you're all obviously fans of Weird Geological Phenomena, I thought I'd put up some more photos of Fingal's Cave. I went for the Informative Photos this time, rather than the Strange and Atmospheric ones. As Fingal's Cave is unfamiliar to a couple of you (the location, not the overture...) I've taken it as an excellent excuse to put up some more photos...
A view into the cave, first of all:-

And some close-ups of the columns:-

I particularly like the view below, which shows just how mixed up the geology is round that neck of the woods. Now, I'm no geologist, but I think that the vertical columns represent one lava flow which has cooled and cracked into the vertical hexagonal columns. The upper columns, which lie at a different angle, appear to represent a later lava flow, showing just how much seismic upheaval took place in the period between both lava flows...
