Welcome to Kate Middleton Country!??!
Jan. 9th, 2012 05:42 pmOkay, so we've decided upon our international holiday destination for 2012 (Carcassone), but our main UK holiday is still up in the air.
In case you hadn't guessed, our way of selecting a holiday destination is to pick a site of archaeological or historic importance - it can be a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it doesn't HAVE to be!! - which we fancy visiting, then we tour the area immediately around it and see what we can find there.
Anyway, this coming year, my sites of choice are the Uffington White Horse and Wayland's Smithy. They're a stone's throw from Wiltshire, so Wiltshire is an option for a destination. I've been thinking along the line of Devizes, Chippenham or Marlborough, but part of me thought it might be worth exploring Berkshire. It's not an area I'm familiar with, so I thought I'd go exploring on the web and see what was worth seeing. I believe that the Uffington White Horse (which is the Classic 'Celtic' horse/dragon/hound, depending on your point of view) is in Berkshire, and I'm sure that Wayland's Smithy is Berkshire, too. So I thought I'd find a nice guide to 'Walks Round Uffington' or whatever.
WRONG!!!!!
Berkshire proudly sells itself on the following: 1) It is the land of Kate Middleton. and 2) It is the home of horse-racing. Come to Newbury!! it says, and apart from that, it says very little else.
Sorry, but this kind of marketing isn't going to cut any ice with this active heritage tourist. I spent five minutes in the site then went "yawn! I've had enough of this." Not even the presence of a couple of pretty castles/Bronze Age barrow cemeteries/and other tasty tidbits could change my mind.
So Wiltshire it is then, I guess.
