Medieval Tower, Shrewsbury
Jan. 6th, 2012 06:31 pmIt's been a while since I posted any pretty pictures of historic buildings/monuments, so I thought I'd redress the balance a bit and trawl the archives...
I didn't quite finish my Shrewsbury posts, so to make up for it I'll introduce you to some nice medieval and early post-medieval buildings (and other things!) from the town.
First up is this 13th century watchtower which lurks in the south of the town, nestling amongst some much later houses from the Georgian periods. It's part of an early fortification - I'd guess it's part of a town wall, built to protect the inhabitants in border country - though I can't actually find any references to its having been part of such a fortification:-

And another view, showing some handsome arrow-slits, and an elegant doorway. The crenellations around the parapet appear, however, to be modern:-
