The first of two posts dedicated to the Lake District now, and a photographic tour of the Greenburn Valley and Gibson Knott...

Our walk took us along exactly the same road that we followed on our August walk to Dollywaggon Pike, but the conditions were somewhat different.  On the left is the looming bulk of Seat Sandal: our August walk took us round the flank of this peak, and up towards the pass that can be seen in the distance:-

We deliberately avoided the high level terrain on this walk, keeping to the lower ground.  Instead of crossing the road towards Seat Sandal, we headed up along the Greenburn Valley to Greenburn Bottom, which is looking particularly bleak and inhospitable below:-

Our target for the day was Gibson Knott.  At 1379 feet in height, it's a very modest fell. The approach from the Greenburn Valley doesn't show the summit very well - here's a view from the other side, looking along Far Easdale.  It forms the highest point of a ridge which runs roughly north-east to south-west along the east side of Far Easdale, with Calf Crag at the north end and Helm Crag at the south:-

A modest fell it may have been, but the views from the summit were lovely.  Here's a view towards Seat Sandal, with our August destination, Dollywagon Pike, seen to the left:-

[Dollywagon and her friends were quite clearly saying to all and sundry - Don't Mess With Us!!  We're Mean, and We DESERVE - nay, DEMAND!!! - respect]

Lastly, a view towards my old favourites, the Langdale Pikes -  Haunt of the Ancestors, the place where many handsome Group VI Neolithic axeheads originated - with Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark prominent features on the skyline:-

If you want to find out more about where these little bits of Langdale ended up, take a look at the link below:-

And because the Ancestors still reign supreme out there in the midwinter cold, I shall celebrate them a wee bit more by posting a gratuitous link to an image of a Group VI Langdale axehead, because these axeheads are lovely and they deserve all the publicity they can get:-

 Enjoy!!!
