Back Home At Last...
Nov. 18th, 2011 07:24 pmWell. I'm back from my jaunt to Birmingham. I shall tell you all about it over the weekend...
I can't help wondering... At what point did I cease to be a prehistorian and re-invent myself as an industrial archaeologist?
Anyway, I thought tonight I'd share some images of the two individuals who've been dominant figures in my life over the last couple of days. They are, of course, Thomas Telford:-

And James Watt:-
They were both born in Scotland, rising from modest roots to become leading figures in Science and Engineering in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Telford started out as stone-mason, before becoming a self-taught architect and surveyor who worked on a dizzying array of building and engineering projects throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. In association with his partner Matthew Bolton, Watt dominated the field of steam engine development and manufacture.
Being granted an insight into their dealings and indeed their working relationship has been fascinating, and all in all, it's been a real pleasure getting to know them both a little bit better..
