Ah, Shrewsbury...
Sep. 24th, 2011 07:19 pm I have returned! From the magnificent realms of Shrewsbury...
We of course had an action-packed holiday, visiting a stone circle, a hillfort, a Roman city, three medieval abbeys, four medieval churches and a couple of industrial sites, as well as a marvellous town where medieval and early modern buildings jostled alongside some splendid Georgian and Queen Anne architecture. Oh, and some stupendous geology, too!
And now, for the first time, I will announce the Endlessrarities Heritage Awards for September 2011.
First of all, the award of Most Utterly Awesome, Stupendous and Altogether Wonderful Heritage Site goes to...
Wenlock Priory!!
With Shrewsbury Abbey and the Church of St Mary, Shrewsbury, coming in a close second and third, respectively....
My next award goes to The Most Notorious Historical Figure goes to....
Roger de Montgomery (aka Roger de Mumbygumby), 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, and William the Conqueror's Chief Hired Goon of the West.
The Runner-up prize is shared between Thomas Telford, and Admiral Benbow, for reasons which will become apparent in due course....
The next award is The Most Over-hyped Monument award, which goes to...
Wroxeter Roman City!!
Closely related to this particular award is the Monument with Best Comedy Value. which once again goes to....
Wroxeter Roman City!! (Or rather, the Roman Villa which has recently been rebuilt there).
The award for Most Puzzling Architectural Conundrum goes to...
The Church of Saint Mary, Shrewsbury
And last (and probably least), we have the award for Most Inappropriate Planning Decision:
The Wrekin (for its um, intrusive, mobile phone mast!)
In the coming weeks, I shall of course be sharing all my impressions and experiences of these monuments with you, so you can decide for yourselves whether these (sometimes dubious) accolades are deserved, or not.
In the meantime, let me share some impressions of Shrewsbury with you:-
