I'm not a Scottish Nationalist. But...
I'm all in favour of teaching Scottish kids about their own history, literature and culture. I don't see why it's political. I don't see why it's playing into the hands of the Nationalists. It makes perfect sense for Scots to learn about their own past, instead of being force-fed a curriculum that's biased towards English history and English literature.
I learned next to nothing about Scottish history when I was at school. We were taught about the Scots Wars of Independence and the battle of Sherrifmuir, but the subtleties of Scots history escaped me. I'm embarrassed to report that it was only when I was researching a historical novel that I started to get to grips with Scottish history (I didn't even know how many Jameses there were, for heavens' sake)and I soon realised that it was well worth further exploration.
I'm going to end on a cliche. How on earth is any nation going to figure out where they're heading if they've haven't a clue where they've come from? Back down, Labour. There's more to Scottish History than the Red Clydesiders...
