Jan. 15th, 2011 10:19 amYes, it's that time of year again. The Attack of The Dreaded Tax Return,,,
Could somebody please explain to me why filing an on-line tax return is as taxing (sorry!) an endeavour as scaling the Matterhorn or tackling the north face of the Eiger? Amongst the welter of ID's and passwords, I finally got through to my tax return, filled in all the data and successfully filed it. This year, I even got a receipt to prove it.
After faithfully paying my contributions through PAYE all year, I have once again been whacked with a £1.45 bill. I'm beginning to suspect that this may actually be an administrative surcharge levied to pay for the cost of completing my on-line tax return (!). Fired with enthusiasm, I tried to pay my bill on-line, only to have my card details refused, again, and again, and again. And I'm now informed that I will not be able to carry out any transactions on my card throughout the remainder of the day. Humph.
I should in theory be able to make a payment at the Post Office. But I don't seem to have the required payslip. I've checked my 'To File' heap, and all my tax folders, and I've unearthed loads of the things left over from 2005 onwards (because, you see, I don't throw things out!). But I've found none for the tax year 2009-2010, and to be honest, I think if I'd received one recently, I'd have noticed.
So it looks like I'll have to make yet another phone call, so I can procure Yet Another Piece of Paper, so I get this damned thing put to bed before January 31st.
And all for the sake of £1.45,,,
I'm sorry. I know you want to hear about castles, and standing stones, and bits of prehistoric metalwork and stuff. But I just had to get that off my chest!
Ah, bureaucracies.... Don't you just love 'em?
