This One's for the Costume Junkies!
Nov. 17th, 2010 09:17 pmIt's time for gravestones, with a return visit to West Linton. There's a theme to the selection this time - a subject which was well-represented in this particular graveyard. We're talking portraiture, albeit of a rather naive kind.
My featured subjects are all eighteenth century in date, so without further ado, I'll introduce you to the first. It features two figures who represent father and son, both named Alexander Denham:-
The inscription on the other side is still reasonably well-preserved and clearly legible over much of its extent, and the winged motif is rather striking:-
But an even more imposing figure appears on this marvellous grave marker, which shows a man wearing buttoned coat, scarf, collar and cap:-
The identity of the man is unknown, as the accompanying inscription no longer survives. All that remains is the date - 1705. This side of the stone is in very poor condition, as a result of surface delamination:-
But even though the words have vanished for ever, the accompanying motifs are still in excellent condition - the crossed bones, and the columns at either side of the inscription.
