The Abbey Church at Fountains
Oct. 14th, 2010 06:33 pmThis is going to be a basic pictorial introduction to the abbey church at Fountains. I'll follow this up with some additional posts which reveal its features in greater detail. For the moment, I'll give you a few overall shots, just to put everything into perspective.
The abbey church was built in the late twelfth century, replacing an earlier early twelfth century church which once occupied the same site. The abbey itself was founded in 1133.

This poor church is just a shadow of its former self, but it's still magnificent. Here's the west front, which had a rather spectacular porch:-
