Meteors? What Meteors??
Aug. 13th, 2010 06:17 pmI think the Perseids have a natural aversion to the West of Scotland.
We went out looking for them last night. We went too early to see the best of the display - between 10 and 11pm. If we stay out after this time, we both turn into pumpkins...
There's some problems with the time slot. It's still not quite dark until 11 o'clock, which doesn't help. And most of the time, it's wet, or at the very least, cloudy.
The skies were fairly clear last night, and when darkness fell, things were looking good. But the Perseids were playing hard to get. After 40 minutes, my husband had spotted 1 and a half meteors, and I'd spotted a half meteor (a half meteor comprising one of these bright streaks & flashes that you spot from the corner of your eye, and curse yourself for looking in the wrong place!). So I guess the Perseids won this round, then!
It's at times like this that I wish I didn't have to work a nine to five. But at least with the Perseids, I can pretty much rest assured that when I finally retire, they'll still be there, gracing our skies around the 12th August.
I struggled through the 1st movement of Mozart's 1st Horn Concerto this evening. 'Struggled' being the appropriate word... My face still hurt after the last time, which is good, because it means I was doing it properly.
