Baroque Splendour...

A swift hop next door now from cathedral church #1 to cathedral church #2 in Amalfi.  And yesterday's debate continues: was church #1 a very large chapterhouse, or are we looking at a multiple church complex?  I'm now swayed towards the latter...

Apologies for the photography - my poor little camera far prefers stark whitewashed walls to all this frescoed magnificance.  Here's a view down the nave of the modern cathedral church:-

I think I prefer the more naive medieval style, but hey, you can't fault the standard of the workmanship.

It gets more ornate than this, too, when you venture down into the crypt, in which is housed a shrine to Saint Andrew, with the inevitable reliquary...  We'll venture to that part of the cathedral church tomorrow.

If you don't like ornate plasterwork and general frothy decor, close your eyes and look away...

I should dig out that pic of the main altar in Worms cathedral. The cathedral itself is Romanesque but that alter is as gilded and Baroques as it can get. :)
