I've been telling docs not to bother with the aneasthetics for years now. Though I admit the dentist can be really nasty - a root canal treatment without it is no fun. But getting some would only slightly dull the pain if I'm lucky, in exchange for a pregnant-whale-sized headache for the rest of the day. Some drops of cloves' oil on the misbehaving tooth have about the same pain-dulling effect without the headache.
