The key to DIY livery is geting support. Best is a horse living out, but someone to turn your horse out in the mornings (so you only have to come once a day) and bring in in the evening should the need arise will cut down on the stress _Total_ DIY where you do all of the checking, every day, and all of the work sounds like a nightmare unless it's in your back yard.

I'm not financially able to have a horse, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat, because life's too short not to enjoy opportunities while you can.
